Comprehensive Speech/Language Evaluation in Philadelphia, Newtown, King of Prussia, Manhattan, Cherry Hill, Princeton, Summit & Online

Speech & Language Evaluations

Is your child struggling to express themselves, follow directions, or speak clearly? Do teachers report concerns about social language, articulation, or comprehension? Are you an adult experiencing word-finding difficulties, stuttering, or communication anxiety? A comprehensive speech and language evaluation can uncover the source of the problem—and point the way toward meaningful support.

At Leonard Educational Evaluations, we provide speech and language assessments for children, adolescents, college students, and adults. Our evaluations help determine eligibility for services, guide therapy, and support IEPs, 504 Plans, or accommodations in academic and professional settings.

What Is a Speech & Language Evaluation?

A speech and language evaluation is a comprehensive clinical assessment that examines an individual’s ability to:

  • Understand and use language (receptive and expressive)

  • Articulate speech sounds clearly and intelligibly

  • Use social/pragmatic language in appropriate ways

  • Communicate effectively across environments (school, home, work)

  • Process verbal instructions, follow conversations, or engage in age-appropriate interactions

Evaluations may also assess fluency (e.g., stuttering) and voice quality (e.g., pitch, hoarseness) when concerns are present.

What’s Included in a Speech/Language Assessment

Our evaluations are age-appropriate, evidence-based, and aligned with both clinical best practices and educational eligibility criteria. A full speech/language evaluation may include:

  • Interview with parent/guardian or client to gather background information

  • Review of developmental, educational, and medical history

  • Standardized language testing in areas such as:

    • Receptive language (understanding vocabulary, grammar, directions)

    • Expressive language (word retrieval, sentence formulation, storytelling)

    • Articulation and phonological processing (clarity of speech sounds)

    • Social/pragmatic language (conversational skills, nonverbal cues)

    • Language processing (comprehension speed, auditory memory)

    • Fluency (e.g., stuttering severity index)

    • Voice assessments, if indicated

  • Teacher and/or therapist input (if applicable)

  • A detailed written report with clinical findings, educational impact, and individualized recommendations

We collaborate with Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) when needed for direct speech therapy referrals or additional intervention planning.

When Should You Consider a Speech/Language Evaluation?

You may benefit from a speech/language assessment if your child or student:

  • Speaks in short or incomplete sentences for their age

  • Struggles to follow directions or answer questions

  • Mispronounces words or sounds after age 5–6 (e.g., /r/, /l/, /s/, /th/)

  • Avoids speaking in class or around peers

  • Has difficulty staying on topic or making themselves understood

  • Struggles with vocabulary, grammar, or word retrieval

  • Demonstrates poor narrative or storytelling skills

  • Displays social communication difficulties (e.g., autism spectrum indicators)

  • Has been denied school-based speech services but still struggles

  • Needs updated documentation for an IEP, 504 Plan, or therapy referral

Adults may also seek testing for communication anxiety, articulation disorders, aphasia, or workplace accommodations related to expressive or receptive language concerns.
